What does it mean to be authentic?

What does it mean to be authentic?

Each of us would like to represent ourselves from our best side to make a good impression. Be it on social media, on a date, at work in front of the boss and work colleagues, or even with your friends. It is completely normal. And there are also situations in which we are expected to adhere to certain social rules and possibly behave differently than we would like to do.

At the same time, however, we also admire people who show themselves for who they are, who don’t care about the opinion of others, and who go through life so carefree. They are real, easy-going, and self-confident – just authentic. Sounds exemplary! But it takes courage and time to be able to show yourself the way you are. It’s not that easy, but it’s not impossible either!

Those who are authentic stand by themselves and are therefore more in tune with themselves. Not only are you doing something good for yourself, but you can also score points with others. But let’s first define the actual term authenticity more precisely.

The word authenticity can be derived from the Greek “authentikos” and means real, unadulterated, or according to the facts. If one applies this term to a person, being authentic means to express oneself and to act according to one’s “true self, including one’s thoughts, emotions, needs, values, preferences, and beliefs. In short: you know what you want and what is important to you, communicate it openly to the outside world, and act accordingly. Authenticity requires self-knowledge. Because only those who know who they are can show their true self.

According to the Dorsch dictionary of phsucology, authentic people do not allow their actions to be determined by external influences, but only by themself. At the same time, however, being authentic does not exclude the possibility of behaving differently in different social roles.

Logical! We are social beings and in everyday dealings with one another, we assume certain roles. So you may be more reliable at work, with your family you may show more your loving side and with friends you want to come across as cool. It’s an art to be true to yourself and still fit in. But it’s worth it!

Why is authenticity important?

People around you have expectations of you. It starts with the little things, like the weekly shopping you did with your roommate. Sometimes this can also affect important life decisions, such as what job you want to do and what your family expects of you. Of course, your loved ones only want what’s best for you. But also ask yourself what you want.

If you try to meet the expectations of others all the time, it is not only very exhausting, you also forget who you are. But that’s exactly what makes you so unique and interesting! And that’s just one of many reasons why you shouldn’t hide behind a mask. Here we have a few more for you:

Regardless of whether it is about friendships, colleagues, or partnerships. Those who are authentic show who they really are and, in the end, are also surrounded by people who appreciate you for that very reason.

Ask yourself, do you even want to be liked by people who only like you when you are who they want you to be? Wouldn’t it be much better if someone wanted you in their life because of your sincerity and who you are? People who like you because of your real personality are happy when you show them and accept them just for who you are.
