How do you overcome a lack of confidence during exercise?

The first step to overcoming a lack of confidence during exercise is acknowledging that it exists. It’s important to understand that we all have different levels of confidence and that some exercises are more difficult than others. The next step is to find a workout routine that is manageable for you. Once you have a routine, make sure to stick to it. Be patient with yourself and don’t compare yourself to others. The most important thing is to have fun and remember that you are doing this for your own benefit. If you are feeling overwhelmed, talk to a trainer or therapist about how to overcome your lack of confidence.

For most of my life, I was overweight — I am 28 now, but only got in shape (not muscular or anything) when I was 24 years old. The thing that kept me back was thinking that I was fugly and I felt ashamed to work out.
One day, when I was working, my manager asked me if I wanted to attend a workout class with him. I was reluctant because I was afraid of being the only overweight person in the room, and he assured me it was fine. As expected, I was the only overweight person in the room; however, there was something critical that I noticed: nobody was paying attention to me. In the class, although everyone did the same workout, the level of difficulty scaled based on how fit they were. As such, everyone was dying (not literally lol) in some shape or form.
The instructors were also a big factor. They were very supportive and gave me many options. As such, within 6 months, I went from 278 lbs. to 190 lbs. — honestly, I feel like that weight drop was a little too fast.
Now, this is pure opinion, but finding a gym, studio, or box (for CrossFit) where you can participate in a group and feel like you are in a welcoming community will help your confidence drastically. If you feel uncomfortable, move on to another place — one where the people are welcoming, supportive, and willing to work with you. You can also have a private trainer — I do this now, but I still feel uncomfortable, to be honest — if that is more of you style. Just do you 🙂
